Well Last night was the second stop on the GSOP, hosted by the people at GaragePokerTour. What a great evening of fun, excitement and learning. I swear it had nothing to do with the fact I came in first place, much better than my appearance last week with 7 card and a disappointing 9th place finish.
I showed up fashionably late and with my Whataburger chicken sandwhich in hand. I let it be known to the people that I had never really played Omaha.... ya right... with a wink and a smile they bought into my pack of lies... oh wait it is the truth, I never really have played it much. I will admit that I did act like I had never played it at all but in reality I did play several $5 tournies of it online at Party Poker in preparation but that really does not count for much.
For me Omaha is not about what cards you had in your hands but what kind of draws that those cards can lead to. Now maybe it is not the corrrect way to play but I was more than willing to call when I would have hands like 8h-7h-Qs-Js, and those were hands that most people preferred to fold it seemed. In my mind I am setting myself up to catch hands like straights and flushes granted they may not be the nuts but they will be strong hands.
The evening played on and one by one people would get knocked out often due to my marginal hand calling self, which appeared to frustrate some but given pot odds, draws and armed with a large chip stack I was willing to take the chances that some would not. Agressive play often is rewarded in Tournaments, I feel this is true for any poker game.
It came down to me and Jim "thejim" Anderson and I was on fire getting dealt all sorts of great hands and catching the cards I needed on the flop. This combined with having Jim outstacked made for a rather short heads up session. His play was not to be blamed for his loss it was more that my extraordinary luck was to blame for my win.
I look forward to the next tournament in the Garage Series Of Poker next week at a new venue. I hope To see you all there, bring your cash and a smile.
other mentionables are Cajun's ability to know the rules and what the pot bet should be within a few seconds of thought.
Also Alan ate 4 slices of pizza... leaving some people to starve...
