The Basics Series

by Nekosohana
poker player

This series is designed specifically with the new player in mind. If you are a new poker player and you want to learn more, I am writing to you. If you are a somewhat new player and you want to play a serious or a better leisure game, this is for you. If you know what "Outs", "Monster Draws", "Implied Odds", and "Straddling the Blinds" are, then I will kindly direct you to Tom and Van's articles. There probably won't be much to surprise you here. With that said, maybe you stick around and learn something anyway…you never know. I want to take you on a 13-week trip specifically designed to help both you and me become better players. Maybe you go pro, maybe you just win a few more times at your home game, or maybe you just stop loosing so much.  Whatever the case, if you are reading this, I want to help you become a strong basic player.  I will cover one topic a week in depth, hoping to bring you to a higher playing level in all 12 points by the end of three months.  If you study and practice this information, while no one on earth can guarantee your frequency in winning, I feel confident that you can increase your win rate in a fair and well thought out game.  I've also included some simple challenges that I hope will help you to think about your game in a greater depth.  Since we are on the honor system, I will ask that any challenge I give you, you try and complete using as little outside information possible, thinking players are the ones who make it in the end.

The Twelve Lessons will be:

#1 Basic Poker Theory - and how it applies to all games (Easy Theory)

#2 Basic Card Smarts (Easy Math, Easy Theory)

#3 Basic Psychology of people with cards (Non Math, Hard Theory)

#4 Basic Bonusing - get paid to learn! (Easy Math, No Theory)

#5 Basic Poker Math - for people like me (Easy Math, No Theory)

#6 Basic Hold Em' for limit (Semi Easy Math)

#7 Six-Week Exam - are you ready to play? (Written Exam)

#8 Basic Hold Em' - for Tournaments (Moderate Math, Moderate Theory)

#9 Basic Skill Development - 1,000 hands in a week! (Challenge)

#10 Basic Skill Dev - there is life beyond Hold Em' (Difficult Math/Theory)

#11 Basic Skill Dev - beating a live H.O.R.S.E. (Very Difficult Theory)

#12 Final Exam – now get out there! (Tournament? TBD)

I'm dying to start, these, but I need some time to write them, and that means that we start next week. In the meantime, I suggest going to Westonpoker.com, logging on to the forums and reading as much as possible. Also, a great place for you to start practicing for free is Titan Poker. They offer a signup bonus as well, use bonus code "weston", which is great for a small bankroll to either play longer, or begin your career as a semi-pro, on you way to pro!
