bad beat story
I don't usually play in any tourney with above a $20 buyin due to my bankroll.
But, tonight, when I logged on to Stars I noticed a 36+3 tourney where an entry for the Sunday 200+15 was being given away for each 215 in the prize pool. So I signed up on a whim. With 77 starting, 12 spots will be given, and 13th gets the remainder ($192).
I've been reading Harrington on Hold'em 2, and was really playing well, thinking about each hand, noticing things about other players, et cetera.
I'm consistently above the shortstacks, but only briefly among the big stacks. Without ever having Kings, Aces, or having any of my smaller pairs flop a set, I feel good about my play. The one time I had queens it got folded around after my standard 3xbb raise.
As we get below 20 people, my stack is hovering just above the "safe zone". As we get to 17, I lose a couple blinds, the blinds go up and I'm sitting at 14th with just over 4k chips (200/400 blinds, with 25 ante). So, I'm not desperate, but close. The fact that there's no benefit to finishing high has made play even tighter/more passive than normal at the end of a tourney.
So when I pick up JJ in middle position with it folded to me, I think. An all-in is just about right (you can disagree, but I'll stick to my guns on this one). I go all-in. It gets folded to the small blind (a player who has been on 2 tables with me and seems solid/aggressive - in fact I like the guy and we've been talking a little in the chat). He thinks. And thinks. He's got plenty of chips and just needs to get rid of 4 people. He thinks. I know I'm ahead, but won't mind picking up the pot here. He thinks and calls time. Finally, he calls. BB folds. He has threes. A call I don't blame him for, and in fact as long as my 4-1 favorite holds up, I will thank him and we'll root for each other on Sunday. Kumbahfuckingyah.
Flop AQK, turn 9, river 3.
