I lack discipline...
Last night I got my ass handed to me playing a middle pair poorly. It was a $.25/.50 game, I was UTG and got dealt 7:spade:7:heart:
I raised to $3, it folded around to late position, who called. Button raised it to $8. SB folds, BB calls, I call, late position calls.
So now we've got a $32 pot and I know my pair is no good.
Best case scenario I'm up against two a minefield of overcards, realistically I'm only in it for the set.
Board comes 7:club: J:club: K:spade:
Woop woop there's my set. Now I'm wondering who might be on a draw, two pair, entertaining that the button (preflop re-raiser) may have hit a set over me.
I checked, late position checked, button bets out $12, (AK?) small blind folded, I call, late position calls.
Turn comes 7:club: J:club: K:spade: 6:heart:
I only have $120 left at this point, and I bet out $25 to mitigate my risk in case the button does have the set, and try to suck some cash out of people who think AK or clubs is good.
Late position calls, button raises all-in ($150 total)
Fuck.
I sit there think about it, put him on one of three things:
AA, KK/JJ, or A:club:K:club:.
After thinking about it some more, I decide he's got an over set (Kings I assume) and call.
Yeah, I put him on a higher hand and called anyway. Yeah, I bet out the $25 to [b:387c440207]mitigate my risk[/b:387c440207] in case he showed that he had a higher set and still called anyway. At this point the late position guy announces he's on a draw and the button [i:387c440207]talks him out of calling[/i:387c440207] saying he doesn't have the odds to call.
Late position folds, the button has a set of kings, and I learn once again that I lack the discipline to fold bottom set even when my read is strong. I know we've all been talking about "I'll go broke set over set every time" but in this case he might as well have showed me his cards my read was so strong.
Also, wtf was the button doing talking a player out of calling in a three-way all-in pot? |
