Re: Skill Level?

Re: Skill Level?

[quote:9359964a67="RedDonkey"]How do you determine what your own skill level is at playing whatever your choice of poker game?

After getting past the introductory levels, what are some good ways to label your current skill level other than the obvious, how much money are you making or how often do you win?[/quote:9359964a67]

hard question... its hard to guage your own skill level and sometimes it is best if others gauge it for you... being self aware is not something that people are good at for the most part. there are sometimes when i feel i am the best in the world and otehrs when i think i am a donkey.

so i guess the key things to think about or ask yourself are:
when playing am i really concentrating?
and what the heck am i concentrating on?
well :
1. the math, you need to know your odds and such. not saying you have to sit there and go hmm i got a 22.7% chance of winning ... but you need to know the generalities that you have around a 20-25% chance.. .and you need to know how to apply that to making a fold or a call... if you know that you know the basics of being above avg. I would say that most players dont even know how to really calculate anything... sure you hear idiots sit there and say hmmm i had pot odds ... and i had to call cause so much money was in the pot ... but alot of the time you break down the real math and they are the real fools... sometimes no matter how big a pot is it is ridiculous to call and you will see them proclaim "pot odds" and call a preflop raise fomr $2 to 200 with 2-7 just cause 5 other people called...

2. do you know your tells? do you know what it means when someone does something ? are you paying enough attention to the players at the table to notice when they have acted a certain way before? or are you busy staring at the cocktail waitresses great ass? do you sit there and try and at least put labels on people based on what you have sen them play before? tight aggressive, loose passive, loose aggressive, tight passive...

3. do you know al lthe classic poker moves and how to apply pressure?
play aggressively? check raise, re-raise, and can you tell when someone is doing it to you ?

4. hand recall.

5. can you roll all these things together?

if you can put all of these things together well then you ought to be making some money .. sure maybe you lose every now and then... but when you lose it ought to be controlled.

the other thing is that if people respect your bets and or avoid hands with you then they have recognized you as a skilled player. and that is likely the best guage. is to get a feel for how other people percieve your play at the table.
