The 200,000 Hands Project
I was thinking about a situation that occured this weekend. I lost a lot of money.
That's all.
OK, not really. Tom and I were discussing my situation at the end of the night and honestly, I've felt like a nit lately. Nothing but whining and no profitability as of late, so I am going to try something radical for a change. And by radical, I mean really wild. Tom mentioned, and I quote: "Well I guess...in this stage of your "career" you really need to see a lot of hands, and I mean like a million or two million hands. Then you'll feel comfortable when the flop comes out and what another guy has."
I don't even know if I can do this, but here is what I intend to do. I wanted to give myself a goal to shut up. And I wanted it to be a long goal, so that I would have to stop bitching about poker for a very long time. I felt that if I could meet this very long goal, but the time I was done, I would have seen enough hands that I would be a lot more familiar with the situations that occur than I was before. I was initially going to title this "The Million Hands Project"...until I figured out how many hours you really have to play to see a million fucking hands. Anybody curious?
1,000,000 hands in a year is approximately,
2740 hands...give or take per day.
To get that many hands in you have to see,
343 hands per hour (342.5). At 45 hph, that translates to:
7-8 tables per hour, for 8 hours. Every day.
So here is how I am going to look at it instead. I'm going to title it "The 200,000 Hand Project". This means that if I play an average of 4 hours a day, using a technique that Van and I were discussing (and it's not a secret technique). I will be forced to play 4 handed for those 4 hours, using a mechanical style of poker. I will be nothing more than a bot that has one goal, to hit a set and crush his opponent. I only have 3 real moves: fold, call, or all-in with more development coming later. So:
Ar 45hph I will play 4 tables an average of 4 hours per night for 720 hands per night. After approximately 8-9 months, I should have completed my mission. I will do this outside of my standard games, online only, but I will still play at Choctaw. However, until those 200,000 hands are done I will not bitch about being a bad player, or get down on myself for the way I play, because there is nothing to the way I play.
The goal of this is not to make money, it's not to impress anyone, and the only reason I tell you all is because you will give me shit if I don't do it. If I need hands to get better at plays and cards, I will see more cards than a live player will see in three years in one year. No more fucking around, no more screwing off, I am going to keep this simple.
#1 I will not move up in levels until I have 500xBB (since I am not in a rush there is no reason for me to worry about it). I've not decided yet, but I think that I am going to play .25-.50 which is 400 big bets with my current bankroll at paradise poker. This is short in relation to what I should have which should be $1000 Every time I go up a level I am going to swap sites with my final goal being to get to Party and Stars where I will stay until the end of my project (which should be 1-2 and up at the major sites).
#2 I will discuss hands with people and I will post hands as well, and try and generate discussion, but I will not bitch about any play, live or otherwise. This is going to be tough, so I will need help on this.
#3 This one is open to discussion, but if my bankroll breaks into the 5-10 online game ($20,000), then I automatically default the project and I am done. I don't think that this is going to happen simply because I don't think that you can set-mine all the way up to 5-10NL. However, what do I know? Apparently, there are some real crazies out there, and I will discuss this with my teachers as I break each level .25-.50/.50-1/1-2/2-5/5-10.
Granted this may be the dumbest thing I've ever tried, but who knows. For 200,000 hands I can do nothing by cast my money in the middle, and play with nothing but disregard for the money under these rules.
If anyone can help me fine tune this, please let me know. I want to keep it simple, and I want to see a shitload of hands, so this is a good option for me. |
