It's not worded correctly.

Most of the time when I sit down in a tourney like this one, I have one goal and that is to win it. So, yes, winning it does "secure as much money as possible".

However, my goal this night was to "move up the ladder". I want to make sure that I get as much money possible. I don't want to leave money on the table. I need to sock away each dollar I can.
