Which is more important?

Which is more important?

Protecting your made hand or getting the draws to put more money in?

I've found myself throwing too much at the pots of my made hands attempting to make sure I don't get outdrawn on. I think this may be keeping me from winning more money if I had just bet something more reasonable to keep the draws in the pot so when they don't hit I cash. But it just seems that they keep drawing out. I sure it all depends on the opposition and each individual hand, but what are your general thoughts?
