Difference in value between a flopped set and flopped trips

Difference in value between a flopped set and flopped trips

I'd love to hear some input on this from those of you more talented than me (which pretty much leaves this open to everyone).

Setting aside the semantics (I know the difference between a set and trips), strategically how are these hands different?

I've personally suffered major damage to my stack when I flopped trips only to find that someone else did the same but with a better kicker. I've also cleaned up on other players when I had a wired pair, flopped a full house, when the other players flopped trip kings or something similar. (See my recent post about my hand at the P******* Room.)

How dangerous are flopped trips? What should you look out for when playing this hand? Should a good player easily throw these away given certain circumstances?
