A 1/2 Hand

A 1/2 Hand

I was playing recently, and the following hand came up. I am in mid-late position with about $300 in chips. The small blind just sat down, so I don't have a lot on him, but he seems solid, even tight. He has won a couple of pots, so he is up to $300 as well. His manner is quiet and deliberate.

I'm dealt A-K offsuit. A guy in early position raises, and I just call. The small blind doesn't see the raise, and completes the small blind. The dealer shows him that the pot has been raised, and he reluctantly calls the raise as well. Everyone else folds, and so there's four of us seeing the flop. About $50 in the pot.

The flop comes out A-8-6 with two diamonds. The small blind pauses for a second, and then slowly stacks ten nickels and pushes them in. The others fold. What is my response and why?

I'm not sure it was the right play, but I called. The next card was a blank, not a king or a diamond, and he pushes in twenty nickels. Can I call that bet? Raise it? Why or why not?

Let me know your thoughts and I'll tell you what happened.
